Communications, Press and Media
The British Embassy’s Press and Public Affairs (PPA) Team leads the France Network’s communications activities by creating and rolling out campaigns which harness press, digital, social media and public diplomacy channels to effectively deliver key messages on behalf of the FCO, the Ambassador and the Embassy’s policy sections and consular team. We are looking for a dynamic Communications Officer with at least 2 years’ experience, excellent French and English, and solid digital know-how to play a key role in PPA’s digital, press, public diplomacy and crisis communications work.
Main Responsibilities
Content creation and design
- Driving the Embassy’s production of high quality and bilingual written and visual content including photographs, videos and infographics;
- Working hand-in-hand with PPA and other policy sections ensuring a regular flow of new and engaging content to highlight the work of the Embassy and the FCO. For example filming, editing and subtitling a videoblog with the Ambassador or designing a series of infographics suitable for French-speakers.
Digital strategy
- Rolling out of the Embassy’s digital strategy within the overall communications objectives.
- Ensuring the Embassy is communicating effectively to its online audiences in both English and French through its website and social media;
- Introducing innovative ways of attracting new traffic to the site through social media and partnerships;
- Measuring impact of campaigns online and collating and analysing statistics to demonstrate impact;
- Sharing digital best practice across the Embassy by transferring know-how and spotting opportunities.
Press
- Working with the rest of the team to ensure messages are effectively delivered to journalists via appropriate channels whenever needed and in creating the daily press review;
- Contributing to the management of media-facing events and visits.
Public Diplomacy
- Participating in the successful delivery of Embassy-wide public diplomacy projects and advising colleagues on the best use of communications to support and promote Embassy objectives;
- Designing publicity materials and invitations for PD events and filming and photographing during events.
Campaigns
- Contributing to PPA’s role in managing FCO and Embassy policy priorities by working closely and advising the relevant teams to ensure a seamless relationship between policy and communications;
- Planning, delivering and measuring impact of those campaigns;
- Responsibilities include liaising with policy sections and updating PPA’s forward-look roadmap.
Content Production/Editing:
- Excellent know-how with Photoshop, editing software like iMovie and multi-track editing programs such as Audacity;
- Experience in producing high quality photographs and videos;
- Excellent writing skills including drafting summaries in French and English.
Digital Management:
- Solid understanding of social media strategies for rolling out Embassy and FCO campaigns over multiple channels (website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn);
- Firm knowledge of emerging online trends, influencers and social media networks and willingness to pioneer their use within the Embassy.
Language Proficiency:
- Advanced spoken and written English and French.
- Interest in international relations and in particular French and British current affairs;
- Knowledge of Content Management Systems (please give examples of any websites or social media channels you created and/or managed);
- Knowledge of French and British press and online media.
