The British High Commission in Ottawa has a part-time vacancy (25 hours per week) for a Consular Officer. The successful applicant will be responsible for providing consular assistance to distressed British nationals, as part of the consular team covering Central and Eastern Canada with a specific focus on Ottawa and the vicinity and the Province of Quebec. 
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Providing consular assistance in accordance with current guidelines. This could include visiting British nationals in hospital or in jail, and providing support to family members following bereavement, a child abduction or custody matter, and providing advice and assistance following a rape or sexual assault
  • Answering the telephone and responding to written and face-to-face customer enquiries
  • Arranging appointments and processing emergency travel document applications
  • Creating and updating case files on the corporate database and managing cases to a satisfactory conclusion
  • Keeping the Consular Manager in Toronto informed of developments in cases
  • Working with Canadian authorities, members of the public and their legal representatives, airlines and tour operators, and British Government Departments
  • Managing and maintaining the electronic appointment calendar
  • Arranging and managing Citizenship Ceremonies
  • Representing the High Commission at consular promotional events and building relationships with relevant external contacts e.g. Canadian authorities, airlines, NGOs etc.
  • Exceptionally, participating in call-out arrangements for emergency cases out of hours when our Global Response Centre in London requests additional support
  • Representing Consular Section at High Commission Heads of Section weekly meetings and performing other duties as assigned
  • The successful candidate must have 1+ years of relevant work experience (to include working with the public).  A relevant Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent experience in a relevant field, is required.
  • Proven track record of excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Must have good organisational skills and the ability to work efficiently and accurately under pressure and to work independently without close supervision.
  • Ability to handle personal issues/information and deal with staff and clients in a friendly and sensitive manner.
  • A good knowledge of multi-cultural Britain, its language, and geography.
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.
  • The successful candidate must also be available to attend a 2 week training course in the UK within the first 3 months of employment.
  • An ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding of IT systems
  • A valid driver's license is desirable but is not necessary.

The position will be offered on a 25 hour-work week, with an annual salary of $30,882.32 plus benefits package including extended health care, dental benefits and pension plan.  The appointment requires pre-existing legal status to live and work in Canada and will be subject to satisfactory references and local and overseas security clearances and a six month probation period.
