The British Embassy, Dubai has a vacancy for a FOOD & DRINK IN-MARKET SPECIALIST, Scottish Development International, Grade C4(L)
The Middle East Regional Office of Scottish Development International, based in the British Embassy in Dubai, is looking to recruit a Food & Drink In-Market Specialist. The Specialist will help Scotland’s food & drink industry to access market opportunites in the Middle East in line with the industry strategy target and the Market Implementation Plan. The job holder will work as part of the SDI field team and will build close relationships with colleagues in SDI, Scottish Enterprise and Highlands & Islands Enterprise. They will support the enhancement of the existing relationships with key trade associations and the broader Scotland Food & Drink partnership. The successful applicant will be employed on a 2 year contract, following the successful completion of a 3 month probationary period.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Customer Relationships
- Build a strong network of trade contacts in the foodservice and retail sector in markets with known potential eg UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and Kuwait, including importers and distributors, food and beverage retail procurement managers, trade associations, regulators and chefs to help identify new growth opportunities for Scotland and connect Scottish companies with contacts in the market.
Market Insight
- Fully research the food and drink supply chain from port of entry to final foodservice or retail customer to understand each stage and the role of each intermediary.
- Identify the individuals and companies within the supply chain which SDI and the Scottish Food & Drink parners need to engage with to open up new opportunities for Scotland.
- Gather market intelligence and regularly report back to partners, to provide further detail on key trends, industry developments and opportunities so as to inform Scottish industry. Clearly articulate sub-sector and sub-geography priorities across the markets to Scottish industry.
- Report on any opportunities, barriers or changes around the regulatory and legislative landscape for food and drink and support Scotland Food & Drink with these.
Build Scotland’s Reputation as a Land of Food & Drink
- In collaboration with SDI marketing colleagues and Scotland Food & Drink partners, develop targeted marketing activities to initiate a favourable environment and reputation for the Scottish food and drink industry. This will include working with our Scotland-based marketing team and supporting inward visits to Scotland of buyers, journalists and trade press.
Company Support
- Work with SDI colleagues to support Scottish food and drink companies with their entry/export strategies by providing market research, intelligence and introductions to business contacts in collaborations with SDI/SE/HIE account teams/internationalisation colleagues.
- Work with Scottish food and drink companies to ensure they can operate effectively in the market on their own eg have appointed a distributor etc; target companies will be discussed with SDI, SE/HIE company growth and SF&D partners.
Partnership Working
- Support the development and maintenance of good working relationships with Scotland Food & Drink and other key partner organisations, stakeholder networks, trade press and business contacts throughout key Middle East markets and in Scotland.
- Highlight opportunities to expand Food & Drink exports as part of a cross-sector approach and work with relevant partners to deliver.
International Market Events
- Lead on identifying appropriate market events for Scottish companies to participate in and establish how we can secure maximum benefit from these engagements.
- Participate in the project team for all Food & Drink international market events taking place in the Middle East.
Other
To take part in the Embassy emergency planning and any response to a Crisis affecting UK citizens.
Minimum Qualifications:
Essential:
- Expert knowledge of the Food & Drink market and supply chain, as well as legislative and regulatory requirements.
- Extensive networks with the Food & Drink industry in key Middle East markets including retailers, importers, distributors, agents, chefs and association leaders.
- Track record in establishing market entry strategies and developing international business for the food & Drink industry, either working within the industry or with supporting organisations.
- Strong relationship managements skills, ideally acquired in a foodservice or retail context.
- Excellent project management skills from scoping an idea to evaluating the results, with the ability to deliver with pace.
- Research and analysis skills, acquired in an international market development context.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong team-working ability, with experience of working within a partnership context.
- Candidates will be expected to spend time in GCC target markets and to travel to Scotland to meet with companies, partners and to attend all relevant training.
Desirable but not essential:
- A knowledge of Scotland and the Scottish food and drink industry
- Practical experience of working in the Economic Development environment
- Experience of International business and investment
- Written and spoken Arabic.

Working Hours and Remuneration
The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including: salary of AED 19,388 per month inclusive, Grade C4(L); performance bonus, five weeks’ vacation per annum, free on-site parking and free access to on-site swimming pool, gymnasium and sports facilities.
Conditioned working hours are 38 hours per week. Standard working hours are from 07.30 am until 2.30 pm on Sunday to Thursday. However, the successful candidate will occassionally be required to work outside normal working hours.
