The British Embassy Paris is part of the UK's network in France and Monaco supporting the government's main aims overseas: keeping Britain safe, making Britain prosperous and helping British nationals. We advise the UK government on French policy, and support close cooperation in areas such as defence, foreign policy, the EU, science and innovation, energy, sustainable development, climate change, illegal immigration and counter-terrorism. We issue visas for the UK to foreign nationals and help British nationals by providing consular services to those who have been involved in crime or other serious incidents.
We are currently looking for a Project Officer - a new position which will provide a flexible support for teams and sections facing short term resource needs. Reporting to the Internal Communications and Change Manager you would be embedded on a project by project basis within different teams across the France Network, providing extra capacity to help deliver time-limited projects, supporting crisis work, and helping deliver corporate change programmes. The successful candidate would get a chance to work on key projects, such as our consular support response to Euro2016, the Battle of the Somme commemoration, VIP visits, policy priorities (e.g. EU, security prosperity) and high level bilateral meetings.
In addition to working on some of our most high profile projects and gaining valuable working knowledge of various teams within the Embassy, the position opens the successful candidate up to training and development opportunities and an organisation which prides itself on its staff wellbeing programmes and flexible working practices.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of priority projects for the Embassy and France Network (not general resourcing gaps). To include project research, project administration, project management. These would include some internal change projects.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders in support of project work; both including internal teams and wider UK and French government departments (ministries, maries etc.). Provide oral and written briefings in support of projects and ensure all those involved are kept up to date with developments.
- Support the delivery of events (receptions, trade shows, bilateral summits, commemorations, inward visits), working with events providers, speakers, preparing guest lists and publicity. Organise and carry out when necessary, reconnaissance programmes and visits related to the events.
- Provide analysis on media coverage associated with projects with support from the media team.
- Take an active role in our Crisis committee work (i.e. our response to major events involving UK nationals).
- Use IT software (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, SharePoint,) to support France Network project teams with project delivery and project administration.
Resources Managed
You will be asked to manage your projects as part of a team and, in some instances, lead your own projects. Purchasing and management of project expenditure may also feature within your project support role.

- Have excellent organisational skills, be accurate and attentive to detail, be able to use strong forward planning and coordinate activity among a wide range of stakeholders;
- Have proven oral and written communication skills in both French and English able to communicate ideas in a readily understandable form;
- Be flexible and be comfortable working in a small team and within a larger group including under pressure;
- Have good problem solving skills and proven ability to think on his/her feet, propose suitable new approaches;
- Be a self-starter, methodical, with good IT skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint) and able to prioritise work and meet deadlines;
- Have strong interpersonal skills. Be able to build strong working relations to ensure the success of projects;
- Fluency in English, both written and oral.
